Blue Flags 2025: 14 will fly this year in Kavala and Thassos.
The top beaches for 2025 were announced at an event held on May 15th for the Blue Flag, ahead of the summer season during which tourism is again expected to break previous years’ records.
The “Blue Flag” is a highly recognizable and trusted symbol, with various beaches being awarded at the start of each tourist season annually. In fact, Greece ranks second worldwide in the number of beaches awarded the Blue Flag.
The criteria for a beach to receive a Blue Flag concern cleanliness, organization, information, the safety of swimmers and visitors, the protection of the natural environment on the coast and surrounding area, as well as environmental awareness.
Nine Blue Flags will fly in the summer of 2025 in the Regional Unit of Kavala and five in the Regional Unit of Thasos, according to the announcement by the Hellenic Society for the Protection of Nature (HSPN), the national operator of the International Blue Flag Program in Greece, awarding beaches, marinas, and tourist boats.
With 623 awarded beaches, Greece again holds 2nd place worldwide among 52 countries. It is worth noting that a steady upward trend is observed in the country, with an increase in awarded sites every year, surpassing 600 awards again. Among the 52 countries participating in the program, Greece holds 15% of the internationally awarded beaches.
The top regional unit in Greece is Chalkidiki, with 93 flags, while the Region of Crete retains the first place with 153 flags. The International Jury awarded 4,302 beaches, 736 marinas, and 158 tourist boats worldwide.
